Abstract

|
|
A case of pulmonary disease in a 70-year-old man due to Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex was found during the fourth nation-wide tuberculosis prevalence survey carried out in 1980. The patient discharged large number of M. avium-intracellulare complex in his sputum for at least one year, but no M. tuberculosis at all. Of 1825 radiological suspects of tuberculosis screened from 23,350 inhabitants aged five years of more residing in 123 sample areas, M. tuberculosis was isolated from 178 patient and M. avium-intracellulare complex from only one patient.
